Fragmentation theory reveals processes controlling iceberg size distributions

چکیده
Abstract Iceberg calving strongly controls glacier mass loss, but the fracture processes leading to iceberg formation are poorly understood due stochastic nature of calving. The size distributions icebergs produced during process can yield information on driving and also affect timing, magnitude, spatial distribution ocean fresh water fluxes near glaciers ice sheets. In this study, we apply fragmentation theory describe key behaviours, based observational modelling data from Greenland Antarctica. both regions, is dominated by elastic-brittle processes, where contain exponential power law components describing large-scale uncorrelated correlated branching fracture, respectively. Other be observed. For Antarctic icebergs, change type ‘stable’ one grinding or crushing shelf disintegration events. Greenland, find that fragment evolve an initial front, into a steeper grinding/crushing-type along-fjord. These results provide entirely new framework for understanding how may react climate forcing.

Manipulating atomic fragmentation processes by controlling the projectile coherence.
We have measured the scattering angle dependence of cross sections for ionization in p+H2 collisions for a fixed projectile energy loss. Depending on the projectile coherence, interference due to indistinguishable diffraction of the projectile from the two atomic centers was either present or absent in the data. This shows that, due to the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, the preparation of t...
متن کاملA pr 1 99 6 Stable distributions in fragmentation processes
We introduce three models of fragmentation in which the largest fragment in the system can be broken at each time step with a fixed probability, p. We solve these models exactly in the long time limit to reveal stable time invariant (scaling) solutions which depend on p and the precise details of the fragmentation process. Various features of these models are compared with those of conventional...
متن کاملInferring Volcanic Degassing Processes from Vesicle Size Distributions
bubble size distributions, fractals, nucleation, volcanism Both power law and exponential vesicle size distributions (VSDs) have been observed in many different types of volcanic rocks. We present results of computer simulations and laboratory analogue experiments which reproduce these findings and show that the distributions can be interpreted as the product of continuous bubble nucleation res...
متن کاملPerioperative and critical illness dysglycemia--controlling the iceberg.
Patients with dysglycemia related to known or unrecognized diabetes, stress hyperglycemia, or hypoglycemia in the presence or absence of exogenous insulin routinely require care during the perioperative period or critical illness. Recent single and multicenter studies, a large multinational study, and three meta-analyses evaluated the safety of routine tight glycemic control (80-110 mg/dl) in c...
متن کاملHomogeneous fragmentation processes
The purpose of this work is to define and study homogeneous fragmentation processes in continuous time, which are meant to describe the evolution of an object that breaks down randomly into pieces as time passes. Roughly, we show that the dynamics of such a fragmentation process are determined by some exchangeable measure on the set of partitions of , and result from the combination of two dif...
